1.Divas Champion Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix

Your days as the cute, perky blond bimbo are over.” – Beth Phoenix, to Divas Champion Kelly Kelly on August 1, 2011.

With those words, The Glamazon had drawn a line in the sand – she was determined to change the very face of the Divas division. At SummerSlam two weeks later, though, she failed in her quest, coming up short in her title match against Kelly Kelly. At Night of Champions, however, Phoenix will once again have an opportunity to usher in a new era. For Kelly Kelly, a victory at the prestigious pay-per-view would go a long way in vindicating her as champion and proving yet again that she’s much more than just a pretty face.

The controversy in the Divas division was brought to stark relief when WWE.com published an article questioning whether or not the Divas division needed “saving.” While the story credited all Divas for their impressive work ethic, its insights clearly rankled some, who felt Beth and her “Divas of Doom” partner, Natalya, were being singled out for preferential treatment.

The dustup shone a long overdue spotlight on a division rich in legendary names such as WWE Hall of Famers Fabulous Moolah and Wendi Richter, as well as the incomparable Trish Stratus. The tension between Kelly Kelly and Phoenix demonstrates just how passionately these women feel about maintaining that historic legacy. Will The Glamazon forge a new era in the Divas division in her hometown of Buffalo, N.Y.? Or will Kelly Kelly finally silence her critics once and for all, convincing the WWE Universe that she’s truly earned the right to be Divas Champion?

2.WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena

Destiny’s a funny thing. At SummerSlam, it seemed as though either John Cena or CM Punk was destined to walk into Night of Champions in possession of the WWE Title. However, that honor was stripped from them both thanks to a contentious series of events that culminated with Alberto Del Rio’s opportunistic Money in the Bank cash-in. Having finally fulfilled his own personal destiny by becoming WWE Champion, The Mexican Aristocrat puts his good fortune to the ultimate test against The Cenation Commander-in-Chief on the one night when every championship will be on the line.

Both staking claim for the No. 1 contendership to Del Rio’s title following the controversial conclusion of their SummerSlam confrontation, Cena and Punk battled on Raw for the right to vie for the WWE Title at Night of Champions. The Cenation leader defeated The Straight Edge Superstar largely due to a distraction by the massive Kevin Nash – a figure that has cast a dark shadow over the WWE Championship landscape since his debut at The Biggest Event of the Summer.

3.CM Punk vs. Triple H (No Disqualification Match)

CM Punk’s fervent quest for answers will lead him to an intense confrontation with WWE’s Chief Operating Officer at Night of Champions, where The Straight Edge Superstar battles 13-time World Champion Triple H.

On an explosive WWE Raw SuperShow, Triple H admitted that he wouldn’t be satisfied by simply pinning Punk’s shoulders to the mat for a three-count. Therefore, using his power as a WWE executive, The Game made the contest a No Disqualification Match. The Second City Savior agreed to that high-risk stipulation, under the condition that The Game must resign as WWE COO if he loses.

Competing in the ring for the first time since his cataclysmic encounter with The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVII in April, The King of Kings would have at one time admired Punk’s anti-authority attitude. However, trading in his D-Generation X gear for a pressed suit and tie, the outlaw-turned-executive intends to silence the self-proclaimed “voice of the voiceless” after months of mouthing off.

Even though Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship victory at The Biggest Event of the Summer was the result of some questionable officiating by The King of Kings himself, The Second City Savior nevertheless basked in the adulation of his screaming fans at the STAPLES Center after defeating fellow WWE Champion John Cena to become the sole bearer of the illustrious prize. Yet, the self-proclaimed “voice of the voiceless” was soon viciously silenced by The Game’s longtime friend Kevin Nash, who charged the ring and laid out Punk with his iconic Jackknife Powerbomb, a maneuver that has destroyed many a foe during the 7-foot former WWE Champion’s storied in-ring career.

Struggling to recover following “Big Sexy’s” unexpected and unprovoked assault, Punk was defenseless as Money in the Bank winner Alberto Del Rio cashed in his WWE Championship opportunity to capture the title. The following night on Raw, the WWE COO affirmed that he had no idea why his longtime friend Nash chose to attack Punk moments after his Undisputed WWE Championship Match. Nash, however, told a different tale altogether, saying that the order to “stick” the winner of that momentous bout came via text message from The Game’s cell phone – and presumably from The Cerebral Assassin himself.

Punk was dissatisfied with the Kliq members’ conflicting stories, and continued to disrespect both men despite their many accolades. Fed up with the silver-tongued Superstar’s verbal jabs, Nash – now officially signed to a WWE contract – challenged Punk to a match on the Aug. 29 edition of Raw. Triple H made that match official for Night of Champions, but The Game later dropped a massive bombshell on Nash, Punk and the entire WWE Universe: He would face Punk himself at the prestigious pay-per-view event. Nash, on the other hand, would ultimately be fired from his WWE contract after being implicated by The Game as the sole person responsible for the SummerSlam hysteria.

4.WWE Tag Team Champions Kofi Kingston & Evan Bourne vs. The Miz & R-Truth

After winning the WWE Tag Team Championships, high-flyers Kofi Kingston & Evan Bourne vowed to take the tag team division to new heights. However, the Superstars collectively known as “Air Boom” will face a fairly steep challenge at Night of Champions. There, the conspiracy-obsessed alliance of The Miz & R-Truth will vie for Kingston & Bourne’s illustrious titles.

It’s easy to imagine such like-minded ring warriors as Kingston & Bourne finding common ground, but few could have expected The Awesome One to get on the same page as someone like Truth – a Superstar that has been utterly consumed by his belief in a vast conspiracy keeping him from reaching his full potential. Frustrated that he is no longer in the spotlight just months after a successful WWE Championship defense at WrestleMania XXVII, The Miz eventually found credence in Truth’s often baffling rants. Perhaps there is a conspiracy afoot in WWE, and the most “must-see” WWE Champion in history could be another victim.

Kingston & Bourne asked the WWE Universe to sound off on Twitter and help them choose an exciting new moniker for their team just moments after their monumental WWE Tag Team Title victory over the menacing tandem of Michael McGillicutty & David Otunga. The response on Twitter was overwhelming, but the newly crowned titleholders ultimately settled on “Air Boom,” a name that encapsulates Bourne’s aerial ability and Kingston’s propensity for dropping the “boom” on his opponents – a potential fate for The Miz & R-Truth at Night of Champions.

“Air Boom” embraces its natural ability to connect with WWE Universe members all around the world, but The Miz & R-Truth’s relationships with WWE fans are strained at best. Irate that they did not have a match scheduled for Night of Champions, the outspoken duo issued a brash challenge to the WWE Tag Team Champions, affirming that “Air” Bourne and The Dreadlocked Dynamo would “get got” on the most prestigious night of the year in Buffalo, New York.
